Silvia Carolina Aldana,

I got my BA degree in Architecture from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, where I took courses on urban planning and developed a strong interest in the subject. Working for the Government, I had the opportunity to get in touch with rural communities and understood that much of the problems in the cities don't depend on urban conditions alone but on the development of a country as a whole. That's when I decided to study development and got a master's degree on International Development Policy from the Seoul National University in South Korea. The program offered by Mundus Urbano will complement my preparation as an integral urban planner.
Ragnheiður Einarsdóttir,

Ragnheiður has got a Bachelor degree in Environmental and Civil Engineering from the University of Iceland. She has got insight into the technical and environmental aspects of the city infrastructure and is looking forward to broadening her horizons.
Gülçin Baysak,

I had my undergraduate degree in Tourism Management from University of Dokuz Eylül, Izmir, Turkey. I was interested in tourism planning of regions and management of tourism destinations. Therefore I chose to study a master course with specialization in "Governance of a tourism destination" at University of Valencia, Spain. Throughout my specialization and internship in UNWTO I was attracted by urban tourism, culture tourism and meeting industry. After completing the master course on “International Cooperation and Urban Development”, I want to pursue a PhD in urban studies and to work in facilitating the cooperation of stakeholders in urban development projects.
Alessa Bennaton,

Born and raised in the chaotic and interesting capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa. Participating in international academic practices and environments (Mexico, Colombia, Spain, and France) has made me aware of the need to discover and encourage our creative uniqueness. Having had the chance to approach and work with impoverished communities of the forgotten inlands of my country and others in the Latin American region (El Salvador, Mexico) has enforced my will to offer my knowledge and experiences for the opportunity of making a change. Architecture and planning practice only have meaning to me if it they are projected in service of those in real need of innovating solutions. This program allows me to further my understanding and practice in subjects I want to focus on and actively implicate myself in the following years of my life. I feel extremely lucky to be taking a part of it.
Saira Butt,

I have recently done my Bachelors in Economics from Lahore College for Women University. After that as partial fulfillment of my degree requirements I did four weeks internship and later was appointed as full time consultant at Johns Hopkins University – Centre for Communication Programs. It is at this premier research Center that I first became acquainted with the phenomenon of urbanization. I belong to the second largest city of Pakistan – Lahore – that has grown tremendously in last couple of decades. There is a wide range of urban issues that the city of Lahore is presently challenged with. A peculiar challenge posed by uneven and unplanned growth of cities in Pakistan is of gender insensitive development. It is here where my specific interest lies that how urban development be gender balanced and sensitive.  I believe urbanization is an inevitable process and I feel lucky to be a part of this Program.

Safa Ashoub Safa Ashoub

My name is Safa, I am 23 years old, I come from Egypt, and I live in Cairo the capital.
I studied Political Science and Public Administration at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS) in Cairo University in the period from 2001 till 2005.
I gained my very first working experience at the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) in Egypt, right after getting my bachelor degree. I worked as a part time staff in an Urban Upgrading project (The Participatory Development Project in Urban Areas – Egypt). I thought of pursuing my master’s degree in political science right after graduation, however after a year; working in the development field, my interest was shifted to do my master’s thesis in an interdisciplinary field, basically from a political economy perspective, as I have always had the interest in studying the issues of globalization and global inequality which is the basis of the work of international development organizations. That’s why I decided I want to go abroad for further studies and that’s how I started looking for scholarships. And on a quick exchange between me and one of my work colleagues, I learned that she was an Erasmus student the year before, and that’s how I received the invitation for Mundus-Urbano. I believe that this program will help me be highly qualified to keep working in the international cooperation and development field.
Natasha  ARURI Natasha  ARURI

24 yrs old, Palestinian, Architect

Living in Palestine is not just about surviving the oppression of the Israeli occupation, but also that of the urban structure of the city; a fact created and imposed by the combination of ignorance of Palestinian decision-makers and policies by the civil administration of the occupation. It is about enduring difficulties caused by mal-planning and their long-term repercussions. As a grassroots activist I work on social-change and raising awareness, but this needs complimentary physical change in the surrounding environment. I look at this program as an opportunity to develop practical and effective tools of intervention for genuine and durable development, not just that of infrastructure, but also that for the livelihood of my loved ones… It’s an opportunity to learn, explore, meet people from all walks of life, and of course: have FUN!!

Muhammad Shamsuzzaman  Muhammad Shamsuzzaman

I am an architect-urban planner by profession and had worked about seven years, from 1998-to 2006 with several international donor funded urban development projects in my home country Bangladesh which is experiencing a rapid rate of uncontrolled urbanization. Just before joining the Mundus Urbano course I was working with an international organization (UN-HABITAT) in Kosovo which is a post-conflict transitional economy and main challenge in practicing urban planning here is to cope with its changing economic and governance system. My first degree in Architecture, obtained in 1992 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (B.U.E.T.) mainly deals with the physical design of buildings and limited urban spaces and have less influence on shaping broader urban landscape, so I turned towards another qualification in Urban Planning which I finished from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) more than ten years back. But over the time new forms of problems are arising and new theories and paradigms have been developed that I need to be updated with. So, I became interested for the Mundus Urbano Course from where I am expecting to learn about the strategies to work with the above mentioned problems in the practical field.
